Assembly and Spot Welding

The customer for this automated cell needed to spot-weld this steel tabs across each item in a complex array of parts. Opus built a robotic cell to accomplish the production of the tabs and assembly of multiple array types.

Opus supplied the stamping equipment to create the intricate weld tabs on both ends of the steel strip. The CRS F3 robot, equipped with a small vacuum gripper, retrieves the strip from the press exit nest.

Once the strip is firmly held, the robot moves it to the required array location and welds one end with the integrated spot welder tips. When one end is welded the robot moves to the other end and welds it down too. The quality of the weld is assured by a computer-controlled welding power supply and force control on the end of the robot. An ATI force sensor is integrated with the CRS control system to provide totally reepeatable weld pressure.

The robot controller also communicates via RS232 to the weld controller for quality auditing of weld control
